How To: Place a Bet

You will need to log-in to the Matchbet Exchange before you can place a bet or even see our markets and prices.

Simply type in your username and password in the boxes provided and click "Log in".

View available events and markets

When you log in to the Matchbet Exchange you will need to open the Event Tree on the left-hand side in order to view the events on which Matchbet is currently offering bets.

Now you can see the available sports and select which you would like to bet on, eg. Football. Once you select an event you will be able to see the markets available.

When you click on the market you wish to bet on, the odds for that market (eg. Correct Score) will be displayed. By default the Exchange will show you the odds for the Match Result market.

Placing a Bet

To place a bet you need to select an event and market, and then highlight the result you wish to bet on; in this case Chelsea to beat Newcastle.

Now that you have selected your result you can see that the Exchange has populated the Place Bet panel and the Matrix. The Matrix is a diagrammatic representation of your bet, showing you which results would mean you win, in this case any involving Chelsea winning the match. The Place Bet panel is where you can adjust the bet you're placing.

The Place Bet panel gives you a number of options relating to your bet. The volume is the amount you wish to stake (bet) and you can choose whether to 'Back' or 'Lay'.

You can also choose between 'Take current offer only' and 'Valid until Matched/Cancelled;' for a description of these please see our Glossary.

If you want to bet against any available bets already in the Exchange you can do so by clicking on 'Set Available Volume'. This will fill the Volume box for you and you can check you're happy with the amount.

Once you have chosen the amount you want to bet you will see that the Exchange is displaying your Bet Exposure, ie. the amount you would risk if you placed this bet.

All you need to do to place your bet is click on Submit Bet.

As you can see in the screenshot below, the process is exactly the same when placing a lay bet.

The Place Bet panel also allows you to view your Available Credit and Potential Winnings before you actually place the bet.

Certain events, such as horse racing or Formula 1, will also have a Winners market and the process of placing a bet of this type is slightly different. As you can see below when you select a Winners market the options on the screen will change. The Matrix is replaced by a Race Panel.

The Race Panel allows you to select any number of potential winners from the available participation.

By dragging names/teams across from the Events and Bets Panel and dropping them into the Race Panel you choose which you would like to bet on as potential winners.

You can delete any item from the Selection by dragging it across into the delete column, or you can remove all selections by clicking on Clear.

Once you've made your selections you choose, as with a bet of any other market type, whether you wish to back or lay.

The Volume box allows you to select a minimum volume to bet, and the Exchange will then calculate the best possible odds for at least that volume, that it can match.

When you click on Get Price the Place Bet panel below will be populated with the odds and the available volume at those odds.

As with any other bet you can choose to bet more or less than the available volume, and anything which the Exchange cannot match will remain as an open bet.

In this example the available volume is shown, but you would not be able to place a bet at this volume because you do not have enough credit available to cover the exposure.

When you are placing any type of bet and are happy with your selection, odds and volume, you simply need to click on Submit Bet. The Exchange will then provide you with a summary of the bet you are about to place and ask you to confirm. You can turn this confirmation request off in Preferences. Once you have clicked Confirm Bet the Exchange will place your bet and will then confirm that this has been successful. Again, this feature can be turned off in Preferences.

Placing a Custom Bet

The Matrix is a diagrammatic representation of your bet. Here the result selected is for Bolton to win and the Matrix is showing all match results which would make your bet successful.

You can customise your bet to get different (ie. better) odds simply by clicking on certain results to remove them from the selection.

Once you are happy with the results selected you can choose whether to back or lay, choose how much you wish to bet and then click on Get Custom Price. The Exchange will then instantly calculate your new odds.

In the example below, certain winning scores for Bolton have been removed from the selection and the odds have changed accordingly.

In the example below, The Draw has been selected as the result, and the bet has then been customised. As above, now that the number of results you have selected have been narrowed down the odds have improved significantly.

When you request a Custom Price the Exchange will automatically display the maximum volume it could match straight-away in the Volume box. You can increase or decrease this amount and any part of your bet which does not get matched immediately will remain as an open bet in the Exchange.
