How To: Place a Bet

You will need to log-in to the Matchbet Exchange before you can place a bet or even see our markets and prices.

Simply type in your username and password in the boxes provided and click Log in.

View available events and markets

When you log in to the Matchbet Exchange you will first see the Event Tree on the left-hand side which shows you the events which Matchbet is currently offering bets on.

Now you can see the available events and select which you would like to bet on, eg. politics. Clicking on 'Politics' will bring up a drop-down menu which lists the politics events on which you can bet. Once you select an event you will be able to see the markets available.

Place a Winner or Multi Win Bet

When you click on the event you want to bet on, as above, the Matchbet Exchange will show you the available markets. In the case of most politics events the available markets will be Winner and Multi Win. In a Winner market you simply choose one winning outcome to bet on. Using the example above, you would decide how large you think the Conservative majority size will be at the general election and choose the outcome which includes that number. If you weren't quite sure and wanted to choose a number of outcomes you can select the Multi Win option and you'll be shown the screen below:

You can now drag and drop as many of the outcomes in the scrollable panel at the top as you would like into the Selection panel.

If you want to remove an outcome from the Selection panel simply drag and drop it into the recycle bin pictured. Once you're happy with your selection just click on Get Price.

The best odds the Matchbet Exchange can give you will appear in the panel in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen and this is where you will submit your bet if you're happy with the odds and once you've chosen the amount you want to bet.

You will also be shown how much money you would risk if you placed this bet (Bet Exposure) and your potential winnings if one of your outcomes is successful.

If you're happy with the odds click on Submit Custom Bet to place your bet. If you would like to try a different range of outcomes and see if you can get better odds, you can easily do so by clicking 'Clear' in the Selection panel and then choosing some new outcomes. You can play around as much as you want until you get a combination and odds you're happy with.

If you want to simply place a Winner bet the process is even simpler. Just highlight the outcome you want to bet on, as below, and the Place Bet panel in the bottom right-hand corner of the screen will automatically show you the details of the proposed bet.

You then check the odds, decide how much you want to bet and click on Submit Bet if you want to place the bet.

The Matchbet Exchange will then provide you with a summary of the bet you are about to place and ask you to confirm. You can turn this confirmation request off in Preferences. Once you have clicked Confirm Bet the Exchange will place your bet and will then confirm that this has been successful. Again, this feature can be turned off in Preferences.

Place Other Bet Types

While many sporting events will show the Winner or Multi Win markets, some will give you the option to place other types of bet.

By default we will always show you the Matchbet Result first, but if you want more information on any of the other bet types displayed please see our Glossary.

To place a bet you need to select an event and market, and then highlight the result you wish to bet on; in this case Barcelona to beat Inter.

Now that you have selected your result you can see that the Exchange has populated the Place Bet panel and the Matrix. The Matrix is a diagrammatic representation of your bet, showing you which results would mean you win, in this case any involving Barcelona winning the match.

As with Winner and Multi Win bets the Place Bet panel gives you information about your bet and a number of different options. You enter the amount you wish to bet (stake) and you can choose whether to 'back' or 'lay'. If you placed a back bet on Barcelona it would mean you were betting on Barcelona to win, whereas if you placed a lay bet it would mean you were betting that they wouldn't win (ie. they would lose).

You can also choose between 'Take current offer only' and 'Valid until Matched/Cancelled' and you can find more information on these option in Customise Your Account.

If you want to bet against any available bets already in the Exchange you can do so by clicking on 'Select Maximum stake'. Alternatively you can choose your own stake. Once you have chosen the amount you want to bet you will see that the Exchange is displaying your Bet Exposure, ie. the amount you would risk if you placed this bet and your Potential Winnings.

All you need to do to place your bet is click on Submit Bet and the process is exactly the same when placing a lay bet.

Placing a Custom Bet

The Outcomes Panel shows you a diagrammatic representation of your bet. Here the result selected is for Barcelona to win and the panel is showing all match results which would make your bet successful.

You can customise your bet to get different (ie. better) odds simply by clicking on certain results to remove them from the selection.

Once you are happy with the results selected you can choose whether to back or lay, choose how much you wish to bet and then click on Get Custom Price. The Exchange will then instantly calculate your new odds. In the example below, certain winning scores for Barcelona have been removed from the selection and the odds have changed accordingly:

In the example below, The Draw has been selected as the result, and the bet has then been customised. As above, now that the number of results you have selected has been narrowed down the odds have improved significantly:
